Is the Chanel Jumbo Still Worth It?
As most of us know, Chanel had yet another price increase recently and all of their most popular bags had a pretty big jump. My favorite size of the Chanel Classic Flap is the Jumbo. It was my first classic flap, it hits comfortably on my body (I’m 5’6” in case anyone was wondering) and it fits everything I need for a full day.
I purchased my first Chanel Jumbo in black caviar leather with silver hardware for $3,940 in April of 2020. It’s a pre-loved bag from Fashionphile (my absolute favorite place to purchase pre-loved bags) and it was labeled as “Very Good” condition. Now, the same bag on Fashionphile is at minimum $1,000 more than when I purchased mine 2 months ago.
This is all because the price in the store has changed of course. Back when I purchased my pre-loved beauty, brand new Jumbos were $6,400 and now the price has jumped to $7,100.
Now, I love Chanel but if I were to spend over $7,000 on a bag, it needs to be Hermes. Chanel Jumbos, Mediums and Maxis (and even the minis can get up to the $5,000 range) on the pre-loved market are almost the same price as pre-loved Birkin 35s. I don’t know about you, but if you put a Chanel Classic Double Flap and an Hermes Birkin in front of me, I’m going for the Birkin and for that reason, I no longer feel the new prices of the Chanel Jumbo are worth it.
I reserved a Chanel Jumbo in Beige Clair on Fashionphile a few months ago through their layaway program and since the pricing was lower then than what I can find now, I’m actually glad that I just purchased my third (and probably my final) Chanel Jumbo.
I love the bag, but at a certain point I just don’t feel this one is worth the price and $7,615 (after CA sales tax for example) is crossing the line for me.
